Stadium History

Stadion Wankdorf stands on the historic site of the original Wankdorf Stadium, which was inaugurated in 1925 and hosted legendary matches such as the 1954 FIFA World Cup Final, known as the “Miracle of Bern,” the 1961 European Cup Final, and the Cup Winners’ Cup Final in 1989. Demolished in 2001, the old stadium gave way to a modern, multifunctional arena that continues its rich football legacy.

The current stadium, officially opened in 2005 and originally named “Stade de Suisse,” serves as the home of BSC Young Boys. It features artificial turf (with natural grass installed for major tournaments such as Euro 2008 and Women’s Euro 2025), an impressive solar panel roof generating over 1.2 million kWh annually, integrated commercial facilities, and a seating capacity of around 32,000. In 2020, its historic name “Stadion Wankdorf” was restored, blending tradition with contemporary design and sustainability.
