Stadium History
Coventry City F.C. decided to move from Highfield Road to a new stadium in 1997, aiming for a larger venue with better amenities. The original plan for a 45,000-seat stadium was delayed and scaled down due to financial issues, contractor withdrawals, and the club’s relegation from the Premiership. By 2002, the plans were revised to a more modest 32,500-seat stadium.
The stadium, initially intended to be called the Jaguar Arena, was renamed the Ricoh Arena after a sponsorship deal with Ricoh. The original deal with Jaguar fell through due to the company’s financial troubles. In May 2021, the stadium’s name changed again to Coventry Building Society Arena following a 10-year naming rights agreement with the building society.
