Stadium History

Ashton Gate Stadium, originally built in the late 19th century, became home to Bristol City FC in 1904. Over the years, it underwent several renovations, with significant updates in 1928, 1958, 1970, and 1994, including the addition of new stands and seating areas, partly in response to the Taylor Report. The stadium’s record attendance dates back to the 1930s, and although plans for relocation were considered, they were ultimately shelved in favor of expanding the existing site.

The stadium has also played a key role in British rugby, regularly hosting Bristol Rugby since 1920. From 2014 to 2016, Ashton Gate underwent its most extensive and costly renovation, resulting in a modernized facility with new main and south stands, as well as improvements to the east stand. These updates have extended the stadium’s life by several decades, ensuring its continued use for both football and rugby.
