Stadium History
Luton Town has been playing at Kenilworth Road since 1905. While it boasts a noble history, the move to this ground was a necessity back then. In 1905, Luton had to relocate from their previous ground, which was sold on short notice by the owner. Despite aiming to leave the ground since 1955, they haven’t succeeded so far. Luton Town may not be among England’s top clubs, but they have achieved significant milestones at Kenilworth Road, with an average attendance of over 25,000 fans per game at its peak.
However, before the crowds started filling the ground, investments were required. In 1921, the main stand was consumed by a fire and had to be rebuilt. The structure raised in 1923 still stands today, though it has undergone a few revamps along the way. Floodlights were inaugurated at the ground in 1953 during a friendly against Turkish Fenerbahce, and a year later, crowds of over 25,000 were attending nearly every game. Unfortunately, in the following decades, attendance steadily dropped due to the installation of seats on all stands. By 1985, the ground became an all-seater with just over 10,000 seats, a configuration that remains the same to this day.
