Stadium History
Stade Louis II is a landmark multi-sport complex in the Fontvieille district of Monaco and the home of AS Monaco. Built on land reclaimed from the Mediterranean, the current stadium was inaugurated by Prince Rainier III on January 25, 1985. AS Monaco played its first match there the following day, defeating RC Lens 3-0. The venue carries the name of Prince Louis II, who inaugurated Monaco’s original stadium in 1939.
The football pitch sits 8.35 metres above street level on the roof of a multi-storey car park, making the stadium one of football’s most distinctive engineering projects. Its nine arches frame the exterior, while the complex also accommodates an athletics track, sports hall, aquatic centre and club offices. The hybrid 105×68-metre pitch and 16,360 seats meet UEFA requirements, and the ground hosted the UEFA Super Cup for many years as well as major athletics events.
