Stadium History
Opened in 1911 as Holstein-Platz, the venue began as a simple field with a wooden stand and was expanded in 1922 and 1927, reaching 18,000 by 1943 before World War II damage led to repairs and a new main stand in 1950, with floodlights added by 1957 and a capacity reaching 30,000. The record crowd of 30,000 came against Hamburger SV in March 1951, while decades of limited investment led to deterioration until the German FA deemed the ground unfit in 2005, prompting a substantial 2006 rebuild with new covered stands and upgraded facilities, marked by a 5–0 reopening win over 1. FC Magdeburg on 9 August 2006.
Following promotion to the 2. Bundesliga in 2017, the stadium was expanded and modernized further, with works completed by spring 2019 and a present capacity of 15,034 on natural grass, while discussions around more extensive redevelopment have cited costs up to €75 million in local reporting. The stadium continues to serve as Holstein Kiel’s home for league and cup fixtures, with address and contact details publicly listed and stadium information provided through the club’s official channels.
