Stadium History
Before the stadium was built, the field was known as Papazın Çayırı (‘priest’s meadow’) and was Turkey’s first official football pitch, hosting the Istanbul Football League’s early games. In 1908, the local teams required a regular field, so the land was leased from Ottoman Sultan Abdul Hamid II, with the construction costs totaling 3,000 Ottoman gold pounds. The field was named the ‘Union Club Field’ after the highest donating club. It became a hub for many Istanbul teams, including İttihatspor, Fenerbahçe, Galatasaray, and Beşiktaş. However, its significance waned with the construction of the larger Taksim Stadium in 1922. Eventually, İttihatspor was compelled to sell it to the state, and in 1933, Fenerbahçe purchased the stadium with the help of then-president Şükrü Saracoğlu.
Renamed Fenerbahçe Stadium, it marked Fenerbahçe SK as the first Turkish club to own its stadium. The club renovated and expanded it over the years, making it the largest football venue in Turkey by 1949, with a capacity of 25,000. In 1998, it was renamed Fenerbahçe Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium in honor of the club’s legendary chairman and Turkey’s fifth prime minister. Extensive renovations from 1999 to 2006 modernized the stadium. In 2015, Ülker secured naming rights in a 10-year deal worth $90 million, officially renaming it Ülker Stadium Fenerbahçe Şükrü Saracoğlu Sports Complex.
