Stadium History

In July 2012, it was announced that Wolfsburg AG would build a new stadium in Allerpark for VfL Wolfsburg, with the goal of providing a better environment for the women’s team. Previously, the women’s team played at the VfL stadium in Elsterweg and achieved German championship, DFB Cup, and UEFA Champions League victories in 2012/13. The new stadium was intended to promote women’s football further.

Allerpark, where the Volkswagen Arena is located, was chosen as the site for AOK Stadium. Wolfsburg AG served as the builder, project manager, and stadium owner, with construction carried out by Strabag and Züblin. The inauguration took place on May 30, 2013, with a budget of approximately 30 million euros. Due to delays, the stadium wasn’t completed as planned for the 2014/15 season but rather for the second half of the 2015 season.

The AOK Niedersachsen secured naming rights for five years, and the stadium was officially opened on January 23, 2015, with a friendly match between VfL Wolfsburg and Karlsruher SC. The stadium has since become the home for the women’s and youth teams, as well as hosting the VfL Center and an interactive football exhibition.
