Stadium History

Stadio Friuli underwent a major redevelopment plan that began taking shape in the early 2000s. After failed attempts to host UEFA European Championships, the owner of Udinese, Giampaolo Pozzo, struck a deal with the city of Udine in 2012. The plan involved downsizing the stadium to around 30,000 seats, eliminating the running track, and constructing simple stands, preserving the iconic arch of the main grandstand. Construction work began in June 2013, with the field moved closer to the main stand, and by 2016, the project was completed, featuring a distinctive facade made of satin-finished steel, giving the stadium an elegant look.
