Stadium History
For decades, supporters of Galatasaray awaited a new stadium, with numerous visions shown and later canceled. Finally, in 2007, an international competition won by the German architects ‘asp’ proved to be the final decision. Construction in the northwestern part of Istanbul began in December 2007. The new stadium, with extensive parking infrastructure, was built into a semi-artificial hill called Seyrantepe, soon renamed by fans as Aslantepe (“Lion’s Hill”). Due to changes in contractors, the project was completed late, in December 2010.
On January 12th, the last official match at the old Ali Sami Yen Stadium was played, and just three days later, Galatasaray faced Ajax Amsterdam in the home opener of the new ground. The venue boasts an impressive 211 skyboxes, with 57 added after opening due to high demand. The remaining approximately 45,000 seats are allocated to regular supporters.
